Rick Ross Not A Suspect In Miami Murder

Maybach Music boss is not a suspect nor is he being sought for questioning in a murder, police confirm to MTV News.

After police found a dead body in front of a Miami Gardens home owned by Rick Ross, the Maybach Music boss' name began to pop up in connection to the killing, but an area detective confirmed to MTV News on Wednesday (February 29) that the rapper is not a suspect, nor is he being sought for questioning.

Miami Gardens officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 7 a.m. ET after reports of gun shots. When police arrived at the scene of the crime they found a dead body in the yard of a house owned by the rapper, whose real name is William Roberts. Though Ross owns the property, it is not where he resides. "He lives at a different location," Detective Michael Wright told MTV News.

The murder is still under investigation and police declined to reveal the name of the deceased at press time. But it seems Rick Ross is definitely in the clear.

In other news, the Double-M-Genius is set to head to court in May for a case with far less serious ramifications. Former L.A. drug kingpin "Freeway" Rick Ross is suing the rapper who he claims is unlawfully profiting from his name. The case was initially thrown out in 2010, but has now been reopened with a trial date set for early May.

A little over a week ago, Rick Ross was named MTV News' Hottest MC in the Game, nabbing the coveted position on a list of 10. His MMG signees, Wale and Meek Mill, took the #10 and #7 spots, respectively.

The cover of <i>XXL</i>'s Freshman issue
Photo: XXL

Class is back in session, and XXL magazine continues its yearly tradition of cherry-picking new rap talent for their annual Freshman issue. Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole and Mac Miller have all at one time appeared on the annual cover, and this time out, XXL inducts 10 more artists for the fifth year in a row with their April issue.

MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC, Machine Gun Kelly, stands front and center on the cover alongside his Bad Boy labelmate French Montana. Atlanta hitmaker Future and hook master Roscoe Dash also made the cut along with Detroit's Danny Brown and Memphis, Tennessee, MC Don Trip.

While most of this year's freshmen have been fixtures on various blog sites and the mixtape circuit, others like Macklemore, Hopsin and Kid Ink may be lesser known, but they've more than earned their keep. Macklemore has already sold out countless shows across the country, while Kid Ink and Hopsin have built quite a digital following.

Australian-born raptress Iggy Azalea makes history as the first female MC to grace the cover of the Freshman issue. The blond-haired Interscope beauty made waves with her 2011 mixtape Ignorant Art and has since hooked up with T.I. to produce her upcoming debut album The New Classic.

Like it does every year, this latest Freshman class has already caused a fuss on the Web, with fans and industry ilk both supporting the list and wondering why their favorite artists didn't make the cover.

What do you think of XXL's 2012 Freshman Class? Tell us in the comments!

Review: Verizon's LG Spectrum offers speed, long life -- and weird UI customization

Verizon's LG Spectrum phone -- equipped with 4G LTE, a great 4.5-inch screen, and a dual-core, 1.5GHz processor -- provides speed and impressive battery life, according to this eWEEK review. However, author Clint Boulton adds, the touchscreen was sometimes unresponsive, and the customizations LG has layered on Android 2.3 aren't much of a success....

What's interesting about the Romney situation is that a presidential candidate's revelations of his wealth haven't always been seen as a gaffe. Anything but. In fact, Americans generally haven't shown an antipathy to wealthy politicians running for president or even rich presidents.

Justin Timberlake Closer To Playing Elton John In Biopic?

John's husband said that Timberlake is on board as soon as a director is nailed down.
By Gil Kaufman

Justin Timberlake and Elton John
Photo: Getty Images

A month ago, word was that Justin Timberlake was #1 on Elton John's wish list to portray the "Benny and the Jets" singer in an upcoming biopic. Now, it sounds like JT is all but signed up for the role, but is awaiting word on a director before he fully commits.

According to E! Online, John's husband and producing partner, David Furnish, said the two music stars have been in serious discussions about the project.

"We're searching for a director," Furnish said. "It's important we all share the same vision ... Elton and Justin have had conversations about it. Justin also says he has to feel comfortable with the director and the director has to be comfortable with Justin. The chemistry is really important. There's no race to make this. We're just going to take the time to make it right."

Timberlake, who popped up on last weekend's "Saturday Night Live" portraying a different musician — Grammy winner Bon Iver — was reportedly eyed
by John for the role in his biopic after the pair collaborated in the David LaChapelle-directed 2001 clip for John's "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore."

Timberlake did a dead-on impression of John in that video and has since proven on "SNL" and the big screen to be an excellent mimic and thoughtful actor. Plus, you know, he can sing, so it's possible he could even credibly croon John's songs in a movie to give it that extra bit of believability.

The script for the John biopic is being written by "Billy Elliot" writer Lee Hall, but a director has not yet been announced. John, who has enjoyed one of the most colorful, outrageous and hit-filled careers in pop history, has said that the movie of his life will not be the usual soft-focus look back.

"It's going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a 'Moulin Rouge!' " John said in January. "I just don't want it to be a normal biopic because my life hasn't been like that. And it only goes up to when I go into rehab in 1990. It starts with me going into rehab and ends when I come out."

Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Actor

It's George Clooney and Jean Dujardin's for the taking, but Gary Oldman can't be underestimated in this up-in-the-air race.
By Josh Wigler

George Clooney in "The Descendants"
Photo: 20th Century Fox

The Academy Awards are shaping up to be a veritable death match between "The Artist" and "The Descendants." Michel Hazanavicius' nostalgia-driven silent film and Alexander Payne's set-in-Hawaii spiritual journey are the front-runners at the Oscars this year, with most onlookers divided on which of these two films will walk away with the top prizes.

Looking beyond Best Picture, the battle between "Artist" and "Descendants" is guaranteed to come down to the Best Actor category. Though five actors are nominated, all signs are pointing to two names for the highly coveted award: George Clooney, nominated for his heartbroken and heartbreaking turn as soon-to-be-widower Matt King in "The Descendants," and Jean Dujardin's performance in "The Artist" as George Valentin, a silent-film actor on the verge of extinction.

Both Clooney and Dujardin are deserving candidates to be sure, but are they guaranteed the win? Could there be a spoiler in the mix? Read on for our predictions and wishes for this year's Best Actor category.

Who Will Win: Yes, in all likelihood, it's down to Dujardin and Clooney. Both turned in praiseworthy performances in their respective films. Dujardin's wordless ways have captivated voters throughout awards season. Likewise, it's impossible to resist Clooney's charms. Both men walked away from the Golden Globes with new awards in their hands. One of them will have an Oscar to add to his trophy shelf come Sunday night. It's essentially a coin toss, but we're putting our money on Camp Clooney. "The Artist" will take Best Picture, and this will be the consolation prize for the "Descendants" crew.

Who Should Win: Gary Oldman for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." It's nearly impossible to believe that Oldman has never been nominated for an Oscar before. But that nomination has finally arrived, for a fairly understated performance as far as Oldman roles go, no less. Oldman's espionage veteran George Smiley isn't the flashiest character in the actor's catalog, but it is the first character to earn Oldman a nomination. And frankly, few expected the esteemed British actor to even earn a nomination at this year's Oscars in the first place. But sometimes, all it takes is a foot in the door to win. Consider this Oldman's foot in the door ... and don't be surprised if he manages to sneak the rest of himself all the way in.

The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Stick with us for everything you need to know leading up to the awards show, and on Sunday, February 26, tune in to MTV.com at 5 p.m. ET for our two-and-a-half-hour red-carpet live stream and updates on the night's big winners.

'Hunger Games': The Memes That Caught Fire

This week's Hobnobbing celebrates Seneca Crane's beard, Peeta's advice and more Web wonders.
By Amy Wilkinson

Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate

Three years can feel like an eternity. That's how long "The Hunger Games" fans will have sat around sharpening their arrows between Lionsgate purchasing the film rights to Suzanne Collins' novel and the movie ultimately swooping into theaters March 23. But it's also been a productive 36 or so months for the series' acolytes, evidenced by the plethora of Panem-centric memes that have cropped up online to amuse, inform and enthrall.

From Seneca Crane's beard to Katniss' orange backpack, let's celebrate the things that have made this infernal wait a little less painful. (Special thanks to Twitter friends who sent in their recommendations.)

Seneca Crane's beard
Wes Bentley's flame-shaped fuzz was destined for Internet infamy. Following the debut of "The Hunger Games" full-length trailer, the stylized scruff seemed to be one of the hottest topics of conversation. A Facebook page (and insightful interview with Hollywood Crush) followed, proving the beard had staying power — even if it didn't stay on Bentley's face forever. "I would have loved to have kept the beard, but that beard took two hours to groom every day," he told MTV News. "It's such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It's exciting that it's getting that kind of attention."

Advice Peeta
Peeta is the wisest baker's son we know. Need proof? Take a gander at Advice Peeta, recommended by @TheHobOrg, where the disembodied head of Josh Hutcherson dispenses pithy platitudes and nuggets of wisdom. "Remember who the real enemy is: Panera," one reads, while another declares, "I set fireeeeeee to the bread." Aw, Peeta's an Adele fan! We knew it.

Lord Buttercup
District 12's male tribute isn't the only character pontificating online. Even Prim's mangy tomcat is getting in on the action. Similarly styled to Advice Peeta, Lord Buttercup, recommended by @mirandahakim, has plenty to say too, like "I am the Mockingjay. LOL JK I'm a cat." The busy feline also manages his own Twitter account, @LordButtercup. Because the revolution needs social-media-minded mongrels.

Effie's shoes
One of the newer (and perhaps less prevalent) memes, recommended by @HGgirlonfire, is a foot fetishist's best friend. Effie Trinket's gold booties (supposedly fashioned after an Alexander McQueen design) made their debut on the recently launched Capitol Couture. And our shoe envy will never be the same.

Katniss' orange backpack
Clearly, "Hunger Games" fans are a fashion-conscious bunch, because when the first "Hunger Games" teaser debuted, and it appeared Katniss' bright backpack had been replaced by a duller version, die-hards were not pleased. Thankfully, further peeks have confirmed that the fiery bag, which Katniss grabs at the beginning of the Games, is indeed a player. And, as recommended by @pikko, it continues to be celebrated on Facebook.

What's your favorite "Hunger Games" meme? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

Last week, mtvU announced that not only would the 2012 Woodie Awards be returning to Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest music festival, but this year, they'll be getting in on the action too, with a free, daylong fest of their own.

And on Friday (February 17), the first batch of performers for the 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Festival were announced, a lineup chock-full of up-and-coming talent from all fields: Rock acts Fun. and Walk the Moon, rapper A$AP Rocky, and electro standout Wallpaper will all perform at the festival, which kicks off at 1 p.m. CT on March 15 and is open to both SXSW badge-holders and the great uncredentialed masses. More acts for the Woodies Fest will be announced at a later date.

If you can't make it down to Austin, don't fret: Beginning March 11, "Woodie Awards Week" will take over MTV, mtvU and MTV.com with performances, interviews and updates from SXSW. And the entire 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Festival will stream live at the Woodies' official site.

It all leads up to the 2012 Woodie Awards, which kick off at 8 p.m. on March 15. That Sunday, March 18, MTV and mtvU will air the best moments from the awards in a 30-minute special.

Voting is already under way in all Woodie categories — nominees include Jay-Z and Kanye West, the Black Keys and Skrillex — and will remain open until March 9 ... except for the "Breaking Woodie" category, for which voting will continue during the live show on March 15. Fans can vote in all categories online or on their mobile phones at m.mtv.com, or by texting "VOTE" to 66333. Standard message and data rates may apply.

The 2012 mtvU Woodies invade SXSW on March 15 with the Woodies Festival. The best of the 2012 mtvU Woodies will air on MTV and mtvU on Sunday (March 18) at 8 p.m. ET.

Taylor Swift Is A 'Hunger Games' 'Fangirl'

But in a real-life Hunger Games, Swift tells MTV News she'd be 'the person who runs and hides.'
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Taylor Swift
Photo: MTV News

MTV News kicked off the week in a big way Monday with the exclusive premiere of the video for Taylor Swift's "Hunger Games" soundtrack song "Safe & Sound," which was followed by a lengthy chat with the country superstar about everything from her love for Suzanne Collins' best-selling book to her adorable cat Meredith.

Swift also took Twitter questions from fans, one of which came from @SafeandSound4Taylor, who asked the Grammy winner what she would do if she were in the real-life Hunger Games.

"I've thought about this, because reading the books, you're so sucked into it that as you go about your life, you sit there, and you're like, 'Could I climb that tree?' 'Could I make a weapon out of this?' 'If I had to forage for food, what would I do?' Honestly, I think I would just be the person who runs and hides," she admitted. "I kind of freeze. You know how you have fight, flight or freeze, those three reactions to something scary? I just freeze."

Swift said she would try to run and hide somewhere, and if she had to kill anyone, she hoped it would be in an indirect way, similar to a few of the deaths Katniss inflicts almost accidentally in the books.

When asked how writing a song for the movie came about, Swift said she received a call directly from the studio and subsequently devoured the books. "I immediately read the book in, like, two days and fell in love with it," she said. "I fell in love with the characters, fell in love with the world that Suzanne Collins had created. I was just so immersed in it."

She also revealed that when she was first asked to pen a song for the soundtrack, she thought she'd be writing something encouraging and upbeat. "When I got the call, I thought from what I'd heard about the movie, 'It's an action movie, right? We're probably going to be writing a song that's like, "We're going to win!" ' And then I read the book, and I thought, 'No, we're going to have to write sort of a death lullaby, it's so different from what I thought.' "

Swift seemed just as excited about seeing the finished film as we are and expressed curiosity in seeing scenes from the actual Games, which we haven't yet been shown via sneak peeks or trailers.

"They have never shown footage of the Games," Swift said. "I'm dying to see that. Everyone wants to see pivotal parts. The relationship with Rue and Katniss and also Peeta and Katniss and their relationship developing, and none of the Games have been shown yet, so I'm so excited for the movie. I'm a fangirl!"

Stick with MTV News as we roll out more from our exclusive interview with Taylor Swift about her "Hunger Games" soundtrack song!

Jay-Z And Pharrell Working On Something 'Crazy'

'I'm just a filmmaker, musically. I let everybody else play the roles,' P tells MTV News of his studio relationship with Jay.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis

Pharrell

All it takes is a hint of a new Jay-Z album to get hip-hop fans into a frenzy.

In December, Hovito said we might get a solo LP from him and a second Throne album in 2012. There hasn't been any talk since, but when MTV News caught up with Pharrell earlier this month, we had to ask if that's still the plan.

"We're working on something, it's crazy," Skateboard P said after a long pause.

The Neptunes producer contributed "Gotta Have It" to last year's Watch the Throne album and also laid the beat for Jay's Blue Ivy dedication, "Glory."

Through the years, Jigga has logged a ton of time with the Neptunes captain, starting with 2000's "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)." Since then, Hov and P have hooked up on a number of notable tracks, including "Excuse Me Miss" from 2002's The Blueprint 2 LP and the Neptunes' 2003 hit "Frontin'."

"We — I say 'we' because I'm in Throne mode — we're in a great place creatively," Jay said of his and Kanye West's chemistry. "You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we're really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone."

With things still in the works, Pharrell is reluctant to let go of any info. Instead, he'd rather just let Jay speak on things when he is ready. "Well, you know, he's very discreet about details and stuff," P said. "I'm just a filmmaker, musically. I let everybody else play the roles."

What do you think of Jay-Z and Pharrell's chemistry in the studio? Tell us in the comments!

Whitney Houston's Death Won't Halt 'Waiting To Exhale' Sequel

'It's almost in her honor that we think to soldier on,' Fox executive says.
By Kara Warner

Those of you who have been patiently waiting for a "Waiting to Exhale" sequel since falling in love with the original in 1995 might soon have a reason to "Exhale" again, despite the tragic death of co-star Whitney Houston.

According to New York magazine's Vulture blog, Fox wants to make something positive of the tragedy and is planning on moving forward with the project in honor of Houston.

"I don't think she would want it to [be shelved]," Fox 2000 Pictures president Elizabeth Gabler told . "It's almost in her honor that we think to soldier on."

Gabler, who worked on the original film, said the feel-good movie about four middle-class African-American women dealing with love and loss in the suburbs was a ground-breaker.

"This was the biggest barrier-buster for color lines," she said. "[Audiences] practically tore the theater down; we couldn't get them to leave. All these young women in their twenties and thirties wanted to stay and talk about what they'd just seen: Suburban women drinking Chablis who weren't living in the projects or stuck in gangs."

The studio picked up the rights to "Exhale" author Terry McMillan's sequel, "Getting to Happy," and has reportedly placed the film on a fast track of sorts, making plans to hire new writers to work on the script under the supervision of the original film's director, Forest Whitaker.

Although nobody has been approached about taking over Houston's role, Gabler mentioned the possibility of "Exhale" supporter Oprah Winfrey coming on-board either to produce or potentially be in the film.

"We literally have not talked about anybody for that part," Gabler said. "Forest, I know, is just ... grieving. He'd been the one who was speaking with her, updating [Houston] on its progress."

Although Houston's co-stars have not yet commented on their intentions to continue plans with the sequel, they did express their extreme sadness upon hearing the news of their friend and former co-star's death.

"I am so thankful to have been enveloped by the warmth of Whitney's great talents. They were undeniable and vast," Angela Bassett said in a statement. "Whatever her burdens, she has at last laid them down and picked up instead a crown. For truly, she was and will ever be for us — who were so captivated by her strengths — unparalleled."

"I am overwhelmed. I cannot wrap my mind around this. I missed the chance to see her at a party this past Thursday and when we spoke last she had just finished 'Sparkle' and she told me how excited she was to start production on 'Waiting to Exhale 2' with Angela, Lela [Rochon] and myself," Loretta Devine said. "My prayers go out to her family and I am so honored for the time I spent working with her on 'Waiting to Exhale,' 'The Preacher's Wife' and on 'Boston Public.' I love you, Whitney, and I will miss your easy laugh."

Share your condolences with Whitney's family and friends on our Facebook page.

Adele Wins Album of the Year, Owns 2012 Grammys

Singer makes victorious return to the spotlight after throat surgery, earning a standing ovation and six Grammys.
By John Mitchell

Adele wins Album of the Year at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards
Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images

The five records vying for Album of the Year couldn't have been more different, leaving Grammy voters with a tough decision to make. From the soulful heartbreak of Adele's 21, the power rock of the Foo Fighters' Wasting Away and the retro reggae-pop of Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans to the anthemic four-on-the-floor dance-stompers of Lady Gaga's Born This Way and the sexy R&B beats of Rihanna's Loud, each and every record brought something new to the table.

But in the end, there could only be one — and the winner wasn't exactly a surprise. As expected Adele's 21 took home the Album of the Year trophy, putting the cap on an excellent night that saw the British superstar earn a minutes-long standing ovation for her performance of "Rolling in the Deep" and sweep through many of the major categories, winning Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance for "Someone Like You," and Song of the Year and Record of the Year for "Rolling in the Deep."

Music legend Diana Ross presented Adele with the award, and the pop powerhouse first thanked her mother, declaring, "Mum, girl did good." Adele could not contain her excitement and became emotional during her acceptance speech. With an ear-to-ear smile and tears in her eyes, she thanked her record company, producers and band.

"This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone's been through it, [that's] a rubbish relationship," Adele told the audience. "And it's gone on to do things ... I can't tell you how I feel about it. It's been the most life-changing year."

The singer then earned a laugh from the audience when she had to stop mid-speech to wipe her running nose.

Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards

Much of 21 was inspired by Adele's failed relationship with a man 10 years her senior. Following the success of her moody, ballad-heavy debut, the singer hoped to make a more-upbeat and contemporary-sounding record, but the sessions went nowhere, resulting in just one completed track, "Take It All." The song was written after a fight with her boyfriend, and when Adele played him the song, it instigated a heated argument that ended their relationship. Heartbroken but musically reinvigorated, Adele immediately hit the studio and began channeling her heartbreak into lyrics, working with veteran producers Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson), Paul Epworth (Florence and the Machine, Cee Lo Green) and music legend Rick Rubin to help her carve out the album's sound.

Expect Adele's stellar performance and Grammy sweep to inspire a major sales surge for her already massive album, which is currently in its 19th week at #1 and is well on its way to becoming the first diamond album in eight years
