Tom Cruise 'Impossible' To Beat At Box Office

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' easily wins #1 spot over long holiday weekend.
By Ryan J. Downey

This Christmas, Tom Cruise was "impossible" to beat at the box office.

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" was the #1 movie over the long holiday weekend, easily beating competition from two competing sequels with an additional $46.2 million as it expanded into wide release. The fourth entry in the Tom Cruise franchise, this one directed by Brad Bird ("The Incredibles"), has racked up $78.6 million in domestic receipts since it debuted in limited release 11 days ago.

"Ghost Protocol" is the best-reviewed entry in the franchise, which kicked off in 1996 with an inaugural film (based on the popular late '60s TV series) directed by Brian De Palma ("Scarface"). Action maestro John Woo ("The Killer") helmed "M:I 2" four years later. The J.J. Abrams-directed "Mission: Impossible III" grossed $134 million during its theatrical run in 2006.

Meanwhile, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" was reviewed far less favorably than its 2009 predecessor. The film, which reunites Robert Downey Jr. in the title role with Jude Law as his faithful partner, Watson, was #2 at the box office with $31.8 million for a two-week total of $90.6 million. "Downey may think this interpretation is an insight, or funny, but it pushes what was already a rude rewriting of the classic characters into eye-rolling camp," wrote the Newark Star Ledger. The first film sits at 70 percent on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer," while "Game of Shadows" was at a "rotten" 59 percent at press time.

The #3 movie at the box office, itself the third in a series, continues a franchise-long tradition of poor reviews. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" carried a series worst 13 percent score on the "Tomatometer" as it collected $20 million for an 11-day $56.9 million total. Neither "Game of Shadows" nor "Shipwrecked" appear likely to get anywhere near the $200 million grosses of their predecessors.

Four of the other five new releases in theaters were from major filmmakers.

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the highly anticipated American adaptation of the popular Swedish book from director David Fincher ("Fight Club"), has made $27.7 million since it opened Tuesday night. Steven Spielberg has two new movies out, "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Horse," which landed at #5 and #7 on the box office chart, respectively. "Tintin" has made $24.1 million while "War Horse" has made $15 million. The latest from director Cameron Crowe opened even lower than his last movie, "Elizabethtown." "We Bought a Zoo," at #6, earned just $15.6 million despite star power in the form of Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. Rock journalist turned filmmaker Crowe has worked with box-office topper Tom Cruise twice: first with "Jerry Maguire" in 1996 and later with "Vanilla Sky" in 2001.

Finally, alien invasion horror flick "The Darkest Hour" opened at #8 with just $5.5 million. The film was not screened in advance for critics, but The Hollywood Reporter, which reviewed the movie, blamed a "flatlining screenplay and the absence of even a single compelling character."

Check out everything we've got on "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

Our Favorite Celebrity Couples Of 2011

From Britney and Jason to K-Stew and R-Pattz, we look back at the best high-profile pair-ups of the year.
By Jocelyn Vena

Jason Trawick and Britney Spears
Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage

From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year.

Britney Spears and Jason Trawick
The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at awards shows and even got naked together in Britney's "Criminal" video, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason put a ring on it. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing."

Who is your top couple of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Summing up Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's year into a little blurb isn't that easy. They went to events together, and Bieber lavishly rented the Staples Center just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his pet snake, Johnson, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. Who could forget the time that K-Stew referred to her not-so-mysterious "English" boyfriend in an interview? We're assuming not R-Pattz.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z
OK, so Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together for, like, an eternity, but it wasn't until this year that the pair really had everyone buzzing. When Beyoncé stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate pregnancy announcement. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West.

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose
Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with Wiz Khalifa. The couple took the world on their wild relationship ride, from doing interviews together to sparking rumors that they had tied the knot. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another.

Did we forget your favorite couple of 2011? Let us know on Facebook!

'It's attached to your head and your body,' actress tells MTV News
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

It took a lot of work for Rooney Mara to become the tattooed Lisbeth Salander. For David Fincher's big-screen adaptation of Stieg Larsson's bestselling "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the actress didn't just have to think like the famed fictional hacker: It was a process to get into not just the mind, but also the body of the 24-year-old character — and Rooney's transformation into the broken and abused Lisbeth lingered with her long after shooting the film.

When MTV News asked if she carried herself differently while playing the character, Mara explained, "I think that I probably did. It's hard to look at yourself in that way. I think it'll be easier for me to really see that years from now. It's impossible to leave it behind whenever it's attached to your head and your body. But when you work 16 hours a day, there isn't really time to do anything else but go home and go to sleep."

Playing Lisbeth certainly comes with a unique skill set that goes far beyond just understanding her dark backstory. Given Lisbeth's penchant for computer hacking, motorcycles and physical activity, it comes as no surprise that Mara had to undergo some intense training for the physically and emotionally demanding role, one that had already been imagined once before by Noomi Rapace in a 2009 film version of the novels.

"That's my favorite thing about my job is that your education never really stops," Mara shared. "I feel like I went to school: I had motorcycle class from 9 to 11, and then I went to dialect class, and then I had skateboarding, and then I had computer training, and then I had kickboxing. I just feel like I learned so much. And that's kind of the most incredible part about my job is I got to acquire all these skills that I never really wanted or needed, but now I have them."

Whatever Mara did seems to have worked. Her performance is garnering her and the film some high critical praise. The flick opened Tuesday (December 20), and also features Daniel Craig, Stellan SkarsgÅrd, Christopher Plummer and Robin Wright.

'The Hobbit' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Much-anticipated return to Middle-earth appeals to loyal 'Lord of the Rings' fans.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Martin Freeman in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"

Just days after the 10th anniversary of the release of "The Fellowship of the Ring," we have our first look at director Peter Jackson's return to Middle-earth. The first trailer for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" packs in a ton of action and gives fans a peek at what they can expect when the first of the two films opens next December.

We took some time off from watching the trailer on repeat to give you the rundown on the five key things you should pay attention to in the trailer.

The Hobbit(s)
It wouldn't be "The Hobbit" without a strong member of the Shire folk to rally behind. Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins, and he jumps right into Jackson's Middle-earth and feels right at home. He also fits in with the two returning hobbits, Elijah Wood and Ian Holm. Both make welcome returns in the trailer and draw in fans of the original films almost effortlessly.

The Dwarves
Almost as important as Bilbo in "The Hobbit," all 13 dwarves play key roles in the story. Fans who feared that the dwarves would look too cartoonish should find some peace of mind with the trailer. They completely worked (especially Richard Armitage as Thorin), with a balance between the child-oriented aspects of the book and the grittier look of the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

The Song
Nothing shows off that balance better than the dwarves' song. J.R.R. Tolkien featured many songs in the novel, and Jackson and co. incorporated this one in a natural way. It's a cool and ominous part of the trailer that sets the tone and shows the film's close adherence to the novel. However, the films do diverge from the novel to cover new material in a few instances.

The White Council
Because the book does not offer enough action for two complete movies, the films have been padded out with tales from the appendixes and other Tolkien books. The main addition is the story of the White Council. For those unfamiliar with the books, during the journey to Lonely Mountain, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the dwarves to fight a mysterious enemy alongside Galadriel and Elrond. Jackson confirmed the story line's presence in the movie, but Cate Blanchett's appearance in the trailer is our only hint of what's to come.

Gollum
The trailer's big reveal comes at the end as the camera cranes down to the One Ring in the foreground. Next thing we know, Bilbo is chatting up Gollum in the dark, and Andy Serkis crawls down to make his welcome return to the character. The ring and Gollum are the two biggest connections between "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings," so their presence here is a near guarantee to rope in any fans of the first films.

Avoid 'Dark Knight Rises' Spoilers With Our Five Tips

As July 20, 2012, release inches closer, how to keep some mystery.
By Kara Warner

Marion Cotillard and Christian Bale in "The Dark Knight Rises"
Photo: Warner Bros.

Gone are the days when moviegoers could arrive at a theater on opening day knowing almost nothing about what would unfold onscreen. Too much technology and the big, bad advertising/promotional machine have made it nearly impossible to avoid finding out about key plot points ahead of time. I don't like it.

Take all this crazy hullabaloo surrounding next year's surefire crowd-pleaser "The Dark Knight Rises," for example. Don't get me wrong: I am as psyched about this movie as anyone; I just don't want to know everything about it. So, in an effort to keep myself from stumbling across something I don't want to, here is a handy guide for avoiding "The Dark Knight Rises" spoilers from now until the film's July 20, 2012, release.

1. Take a Stand/Tell Your Friends
I don't know about you, but my film-obsessed friends are the worst offenders when it comes to spoilers. They'll start conversations with, "Did you see [spoiler] in that teaser for [movie]?!?" Be proactive, and politely inform your nearest and dearest that you really and truly wish to remain as spoiler-free as possible — and that the future of your relationship depends upon it.

2. Stay Away From Social-Networking Sites
This is tough one, living in this overly connected day and age of ours, but very important if you're committed to the cause. If you have to be on Twitter and Facebook, try to limit your use on days when there is news or new videos announced or leaked about the flick. Be on the lookout for "spoiler-free" reportage, because as nice as it is to come across a "Spoiler Alert!" it's often right in front of or next to the spoiler in question. Also, if you've followed through with item #1 on this list, your friends might do you a solid and avoid drawing your attention to their overly descriptive, excited reactions and remarks in their tweets and status updates.

3. Don't Watch Trailers
Once upon a time, watching the previews before a movie used to be as paramount to my film-going experience as seeing the full-length feature that followed them. That was up until a few years ago when studios started churning out five-minute reveal-all opuses that give away the best gags, lines, action sequences and cameos. I know that the new "Dark Knight Rises" trailer is amazing without watching it, and I'll be following the protocol set with Nolan's previous Batman films wherein I'll watch the trailers after I see the film. Caveat: I will watch a trailer if I've read the source material, i.e. the book, graphic novel, self-help book upon which the film is based. Or if I'm forced to write about it, which leads to the next item ...

4. Don't Have a Job Covering Entertainment News
Make no mistake, I love my job. Live for it, most days. The only thing worth complaining about is the state of being constantly over-informed. We journalists should go after and keep up with any and all pertinent information as it relates to our audience, but in doing so, we're confronted with the proverbial double-edged sword in being too in-the-know. Plus, sometimes we're invited to very special events and presentations with preview footage and conversations with filmmakers that cannot be ignored, as was the case with the early press screening of the "Dark Knight Rises" prologue I attended.

5. Be Realistic, or Move to El Paso
Let's face it: It's nearly impossible to avoid all spoilers. You never know when a new TV spot will air, a photo will leak or your friends will strike up a conversation about Bane's mumblings or Catwoman's costume. Just as it seems ridiculous to obsess over uncovering spoilers, it's probably equally unhealthy to rearrange your life to avoid them. But in making people aware of your wishes, limiting your social networking on certain newsy days and not watching trailers, it's possible to walk into the theater on July 20 without having been exposed to the entire plot and future of the franchise. Or you can move to El Paso, Texas, which was recently named the least socially networked city in the United States and where you're more likely to have a conversation about BBQ than Batman.

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

VH1 Divas Bring Style, Soul To Red Carpet

Some of the industry's biggest divas brought more than just soul to "VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul" on Sunday night: they also brought style.

The annual show, which this year celebrates the birthplaces of soul music, is set to air Monday (December 19) at 9 p.m. ET on VH1. MTV News hit the red carpet at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom, where we got to preview the fashion.

Jennifer Hudson showed off her stunning figure in a skin-tight Francesco Scognamiglio dress with a ruffled neckline. The Oscar winner completed the look with thigh-high rose-colored boots, also by Francesco Scognamiglio. Mary J. Blige worked the carpet in a champagne-colored, crystal-embellished gown from Michael Kors.

Florence, MJB, Jessie J Bring the Glam at 'Divas': MTV Style Has the Looks!

Champagne seemed to be a trend for the night, as Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch also opted for a nude color in an embroidered Antonio Berardi dress.

Welch was on hand to honor the late Amy Winehouse. "It's a real honor, actually, to be counted amongst these amazing female performers," Welch told MTV News on Friday. "It's really special for me, because I am still a relatively new artist, and to be up there with these really established singers is amazing for me ... I'm really grateful."

British songstress Jessie J, who never shies away from taking fashion risks, bared almost all in a sheer black dress with gold detailing, complete with shoulder pads and a black panel bottom.

The boys also held their own against powerful divas like Kelly Clarkson and Jill Scott, as Travie McCoy and Boyz II Men took the "Divas" stage.

Tune in to "VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul" on Monday, December 19, at 9 p.m. ET on VH1!

Golden Globe Nominations Led By 'The Artist'

Silent black-and-white film earns six nods, while 'The Descendants' and 'The Help' rack up five each.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The stars woke up early Thursday (December 15), hoping to hear their names when the nominations for the 69th annual Golden Globes were announced. Without many front-runners in the major categories, the Globe nominations gave one of the first serious indications of how the Academy Awards will play out in February. "The Artist," with six nominations, and "The Descendants" and "The Help," with five each, cemented their place at the top of the Best Picture race.

"The Artist," the silent, black-and-white tribute to old Hollywood, wowed audiences during the festival circuit and earned the most nods. In addition to its nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, both Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo walked away with acting nominations for their mostly silent roles. Writer/director Michel Hazanavicius earned mentions for both of his duties on the film.

The big surprise from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ended up being "Ides of March," the George Clooney-directed political drama that found mild success with critics but fell behind in the early weeks of awards season. It scored four nominations in all.

Also on the board with four total nominations was "Moneyball," the true-life drama about the changing world of baseball starring Brad Pitt. Pitt earned a nomination for Best Lead Actor - Drama, while co-star Jonah Hill earned a Supporting Actor nod. "Moneyball" also racked up nominations for Best Motion Picture - Drama and for the screenplay written by Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin, and Stan Chervin.

Two of Hollywood's biggest stars repeated with two nominations in major categories. "The Ides of March" co-stars Ryan Gosling and Clooney both doubled up on awards. Gosling snagged leading actor nods in both the drama and comedy categories for "The Ides of March" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love," which surprised by not getting a Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy nomination. Clooney also walked away with two, one for his directing efforts with "The Ides of March" and one for his lead role in "The Descendants."

"Bridesmaids" earned a nomination in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category. Actress (and co-writer) Kristen Wiig scored a nomination for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy, but co-star Melissa McCarthy, the awards favorite from the film, failed to capture the HFPA's attention for Supporting Actress.

A potential awards dark horse, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" had gained some momentum with an extensive "For Your Consideration" ad campaign, but the HFPA didn't hand out any awards to the blockbuster series' final chapter, as some had predicted.

For television, the biggest story may be the shakeup in both of the Best Series categories. New series dominated both categories, taking up seven of the 10 spots with nominations for "American Horror Story," "Boss," "Game of Thrones," "Homeland," "Enlightened," "Episodes" and "New Girl." "Breaking Bad," a critical favorite, went unrecognized, aside from Bryan Cranston's lead actor nomination. Former awards mainstay "The Office" received no nominations.

'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows': Reviews Are In!

Critics weren't wowed by director Guy Ritchie's 2009 original, and this time around is no different.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Robert Downey Jr. in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"

Robert Downey Jr.'s steampunk take on the classic literary detective returns for a new mystery in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

The first film from 2009 didn't exactly wow the critics, and the sequel is no exception. The mixed response ranges from "better than the first" to "one of the worst of the year," but the chemistry between Downey and Jude Law earned the critics' highest complements.

We've rounded up some of the best reviews to give you a sense what the critics are saying:

The Story
"As the film opens, Watson is paying a visit to his occasional partner in solving crimes. His wedding to Mary (Kelly Reilly) is fast approaching and Holmes is to be his best man. The intrigues begin in earnest with the bachelor party Holmes throws at an eccentric gentleman's club, in which none of Dr. Watson's pals show up but two new characters do — a very wry Stephen Fry as Holmes' brother, Mycroft, and a Gypsy fortuneteller Madam Simza Heron, played by Noomi Rapace. Holmes has had a chance encounter (or was it) with the lovely Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) who seemed clearly over her head in something that involves Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris, the age-old nemesis, but newly arrived to the films and as dapper as he is in 'Mad Men')." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Robert Downey Jr.
"Really, if [director Guy] Ritchie were on the case, even a little bit, how could he not notice Robert Downey Jr. giving the worst performance of his career? This is a director of some stature. He could talk to his star and help him. Here is an actor capable of dazzling audiences with his virtuosity, and yet there he is, slack and flat, phoning it in with a blithe delivery and his accent going in and out. Downey knows — of course he knows — that he could sleepwalk through the movie, and it will still be a hit." — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The Direction
"Ritchie has done it again. In an act of criminal negligence, he's wasted Robert Downey Jr. — an actor with the perfect verbal dexterity to play Sherlock Holmes — in a sequel that eliminates smarts in favor of relentless headbanging. 2009's 'Sherlock Holmes' was lousy, but it was also a big hit. So the sequel, 'A Game of Shadows,' is more of the stupid same. It wouldn't matter so much if Downey and Jude Law, as the bromantic Dr. Watson, didn't look so ready to turn on the cerebral dazzle. Instead, Ritchie treats them like action goons out of his 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' basement." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

As a Sequel
"After Guy Ritchie's 'Sherlock Holmes' (2009) with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law grossed something like half a billion dollars, this was no time to rethink the approach. What they have done, however, is add a degree of refinement and invention, and I enjoyed this one more than the earlier film." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Final Word
"It's elementary. If you enjoyed the first 'Sherlock Holmes' directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson, then you'll likely leave the sequel feeling satiated." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

Bachmann Tries To Regain Early Iowa Lead
